Tandem duo Jason Bryn (Tucson, AZ) and Glenn Bunselmeyer (Bellevue, WA) will "Go for the Gold" as they represent the United States in the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games, September 16-28. Team Bryn is expected to be in medal contention in the omni road event (road race and time trial) and 4 km track pursuit against a world-class mens tandem field.
Having raced in the 2002 Paralympic World Championships, Jason knows what he and Glenn are up against and how difficult it will be to medal. As underdogs Glenn and Jason are motivated to make all the sacrifice worth it by bringing home a medal.
Jason is visually impaired and rides on the back of the tandem as the "stoker". Glenn is Jason's eyes and serves as his "pilot". Tandem cycling is the only Paralympic sport where an able-bodied athlete has the opportunity to medal along with the disabled athlete. For Jason and Glenn tandem racing at this level is about being physically and mentally one on the bike. The success of U.S. Paralympic Tandem Team Bryn showcases that a disability does not always have to be disabling.
Follow Jason and Glenn's quest for gold from the Olympic Training Center and Athens. Feel free to check in daily for new journal entries, updates and results!
Tandem Team Bryn is more than just Jason and Glenn. It includes Jason's family support system, his many tandem pilots, the Tucson and Arizona cycling community, and sponsors. Thank you to the many who have helped over the past four years in making this dream possible.
Jason would not have qualified for Athens had it not been for the time, commitment, effort and sweat of cyclists Andy DuVall (Tucson), Zach MacDonald (Tucson), Rupert Laumann (Tucson), Chris Rozdilski (Connecticut), Matt Zoll (Tucson), Simon Washington (Tucson), Dan McGehee (Mesa), Butch Jackson (Tucson), Justin Peschka (Flagstaff), Mike Maslowski (Tucson) and Glenn Bunselmeyer (Bellvue, WA).
