Dear Mrs. Holmaas Third Grade Class:
Hi all! Did some sight seeing yesterday that I want to tell you about.
See, Athens and Greece is known around the world for having old building structures. When I say "old"...I mean thousands of years older than almost anything in the United States!
In the middle of Athens there are old building structures (columns and buildings) that were built around 500 B.C. Amazingly, some of the structures built to honor Greek Gods remain intact today. The names of the buildings that I saw are Temple of Zeus and Parthenon. There are several structures and buildings up on a hillside, or small mountain. It is called Acropolis, which means "city up high" or "city on the hill". Glenn also went and saw the old Olympic stadium, Olympia.
Now, if these buildings and structures were built in 500 B.C., how old are they?
HINT #1: What does "B.C." and "A.D." mean?
HINT #2: Our current year is 2004 A.D.
Okay, take some time to figure it out before you read further.
Okay...good job.
EXERCISE: Go on the Internet to a search engine, like GOOGLE (www.google.com) where Mrs. Holmaas can put in separately "Acropolis", "Temple of Zeus" and "Olympia" to see pictures of them. Megan's mom and aunt are staying in hotel and their balcony looks out onto the Temple of Zeus. An incredible view!
Now, try to figure out how these structures were put together. Talk about it...and when I come to your class I will share with you what we observed and learned about how some of the columns were constructed. Remember, they had no sky skaper cranes.
Have fun. We are gearing up for our BIG races on Saturday and Monday. Getting excited! Bye now.
