Thankful for the support
Thursday, August 26, 2004

I am at our final U.S. Paralympic Cycling Team preparatory camp in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Training Center.  Will be here training until we leave for Athens on Sept 9.  A long time away from home, family and work.  Won't be home from Athens until Oct!  As Megan, Thomas and Ellie (my children) remind me... that is 40 days and 40 nights!

The sendoff party on Saturday, the day before I left for camp, made me think of all the help and support I have had to get to this point.  The party was organized by my trusty pilot Rupert Laumann ("Big George" - he is to me what George Hincappie is to Lance Armstrong) and his family.  It was a wonderful sendoff, with over 75 friends and family.   Nine of my pilots were there.  That was so neat to share that with them.  With most pilots being 6'2" to 6"5 (and me at 6'8") seemed almost like a basketeball team.  Of course, Matt Zoll (what, about 5'11"?) would be our point guard.  Was excited to see Simon Washington after his 7 months in Korea.

It was great seeing everyone and sharing the accomplishment in making my 4 year goal a reality.  Now, the real goal lies ahead...bringing home a medal.  Will be tough, but we are confident.

Without all the help I have received over the past 4 years I would not be where I am today.  I am SO thankful for the financial support from friends, family and sponsors.  The financial burden of this endeavor almost makes it impossible.  Hopefully the program in the future will provide financial support and equipment support to the cyclists.  Right now it does not.

Of course I would not be able to do this without my 12 partners (pilots) who have served as my eyes on and off the bike and who have spent time, sweat and tears with me over the past four years.  I owe all of them so much.  They are my "trusted mates".  Love you guys!  And Andy...big hug (he hates my big Jason hugs!).  Chris...I miss you man!

Donna (my wife) and the kids are my everything.  Donna and I decided that it was worth the time, energy and money to jump through this small window of opportunity.  Without their daily support, I would not be doing this.

It has been a lot of sacrifice to many...and for that I sincerely thank you.
